Are YOU Prepared?
Last year 55 percent of families in the U.S. were not properly prepared for an emergency, according to a Harris Interactive survey sponsored by GE Generator Systems.
Are you prepared for a disaster to strike? Do you know what kind of disaster could affect your area? Do you know what you would do if a disaster would hit your area, where you would go, who you would turn to help? Did you know that September is National Preparedness month- use these tips to get started planning for a disaster situation.
Get a Kit
- Purchase one or make your own.
- Contain items the enable you to provide comfort for a range of events from everyday scrapes to life threating emergencies.
- Remember to tell your neighbors, family, and your workplace to have kits as well so they can be prepared.
Make a Plan
- Meet with your family/household members and make a plan, and practice the plan!
- Discuss how to prepare and respond to emergencies.
- Identify how and where to turn off utilities like natural gas, water and electricity.
- Identify responsibilities for each member of your household and plan to work together as a team.
- Have emergency contact information in writing or programmed into each other's phones.
Be Informed
- Get information- learn the ways you would get information during a disaster or an emergency.
- Know your region- Learn about the disasters that may occur in your area.
- Action steps- Learn first aid from your local Red Cross Chapter.
