Are you prepared for an emergency or disaster-type situation? If there was an emergency tomorrow, would your family have a plan? Last year's hurricanes made many citizens realize the need for an emergency or disaster preparedness plan. The more recent tornados, flooding and wildfires are yet another reminder of how critical it is for Americans to prepare now for emergency or disaster situations. According to the Department of Homeland Security's Under Secretary for Preparedness, George W. Foresman, "All Americans have a responsibility to take steps now to be prepared for emergencies whether they are caused by nature or by man." Every family needs a comprehensive emergency action plan, which includes an emergency supply kit, personal information and important documents, evacuation plans complete with escape routes, and a communication plan complete with emergency contact information.
Some key questions to consider when creating a personal emergency preparedness plan include:
- An escape or evacuation route in place.
- A designated meeting place in case of separation.
- A list of contact information including family members out of state that can serve as a point of contact.
- A disaster supply kit with necessary supplies.(i.e. flash light, blankets, gloves and a multi function utility tool. Just to list a few.)
- A first aid kit that includes necessary prescription medicines, overthe-counter medicines, and basic medical supplies.
- Enough non-perishable food and bottled water. (i.e. canned fruit, vegetables, cereals and other dry foods. Just to list a few)
- Access to important family documents, including insurance policies, bank, credit card and loan information and family records such as birth certificates and social security cards.
